Architecture is a broad discipline. Architects explore meaning through form and at the same time think about practical issues. They negotiate with an array of consultants from planners to CDM co-ordinators.
The Design Process:
Ian follows “the design process” and takes clients through the various hoops of conception, outline plans, detailing and building contract. He has extensive “on site” experience through acting in project management and more recently as a developer.
“Drawings only” service
Where clients wish to arrange building work themselves but require professional help to obtain planning permission and a building warrant we are able to develop ideas with them and deal with the authorities on their behalf.
“Classic” service
Our usual way of working is to meet with clients several times to explore ideas and once a design has been agreed apply for permissions on their behalf. We then develop the project further, obtain prices and administer a building contract, dealing with consultants such as engineers along the way. This is usually the most effective way of controlling cost, quality and time.
“Builder” service
We work closely with a local builder and where a given budget, rather than space, is the critical factor, we can agree a complete package at that price. This approach is less competitive than a normal contract with tenders and is in itself fairly inflexible. However, if rates are agreed at the start then changes can be negotiated as work proceeds.
Technical support
In the course of a project specialists may be required and are employed separately by the client. For smaller projects we provide advice ourselves and can act as CDM Co-ordinators, liaise with Planning and Historic Scotland, discuss access issues, provide energy calculations, make suggestions about sustainability, etc. We can even design your web site!
Drawings are produced using Vectorworks, a 3D drafting programme with strong 2D functionality. Happily it can import and export to other CAD programmes to facilitate consultation within the design team.
There are many architectural firms in Scotland. We're all slightly different from each other. The best choice will be a firm that shares your priorities and will lead to spaces that you enjoy, made to an acceptable budget and timeframe. A list of Scottish architects is available HERE.
